Do not write a long “biography” of hanake – only refer to the historical facts that are relevant to your argument.

Evaluate the ways in which Michael Hanake represents “independent” filmmaking. Focus on elements and perspectives that demonstrate how his films and techniques are NOT conventional. Certainly, some of it will be “conventional” in some ways – just keep more of the focus on the way he demonstrates his “independence.”
Cite specific examples – scenes, shots, lines of dialogue, etc. – to support the points. DO NOT write a long “biography” of Hanake – only refer to the historical facts that are relevant to your argument. Brief, specific quotes that make strong critical points are encouraged. Cite sources, MLA format.

– the font size must be 12 point.

We’ve spent the last two weeks debating various theories about art and its meaning. This writing assignment allows you to revisit those while practicing argumentative skills unique to philosophical writing. Your goal as you complete this assignment is to be as clear and precise as possible.
Your job is to write a 400-word (1-1.5 page) essay. The essay will have four paragraphs:
– Paragraph 1. Present an artwork of your interest (it could be a musical piece, a painting, a novel, a performance, etc.). Please describe it in your own words and also include a link to where I can view/hear/read the artwork.
– Paragraphs 2 and 3. Analyze the work of art using any of the philosophical theories we have learned about.
In the second paragraph, present your chosen theory and explain why you chose it. Make sure you select a theory that can be easily applied to the piece you want to analyze (for example, conceptual art may not be the best thing to analyze using Kant’s theory). You could also select the piece based on the theory you want to investigate.
Please concentrate on one or two aspects of the piece that stand out the most – it could be its meaning in light of some author declaration, how it affects our cognitive faculties, and so on. Make it clear how you are applying the theory to better understand the work of art.
– Paragraph 4. Here is where you can express your personal opinion and tell us what you think about the preceding discussion: Does it give us a thorough understanding of the piece? Is it missing an important aspect of the public’s experience? If you say yes or no, make sure to explain why.
Specifics
– The paper must be no more than 450 words.
– The sentences must be short – a good rule of thumb is not to exceed 16 words (Phrases connected by a semicolon, colon, or comma still count as one sentence.)
– The paper must be double spaced.
– The font size must be 12 point.
– Use at least 3 sources (two, at least, of philosophical texts) and make sure to cite them properly.
Evaluation. Your paper will be graded along four rubrics:
– Understanding. Have you correctly understood the argument at issue?
– Clarity & Precision. Have you expressed yourself in a clear and precise manner? Have you avoided ambiguity and sloppy phrasing?
– Dialectic. Do you see how your point of view (paragraph 4) could undermine the discussed theory? How might the philosopher with whom you are conversing respond?
– Word & Sentence
The main goal of this essay is to spark a conversation between your creative abilities and existing philosophical theories. This means that it may take some time to fully formulate the type of analysis you want to conduct, but once you do, the rest should be relatively simple.
If you have any questions or encounter any difficulties, please do not hesitate to contact me. If you require more time to complete your work, you may be granted an extension of 2-3 days (send me an email).
