You will create a report on a topic of your choice, preferably one that relates to your degree and/or interests. The report should be visually interesting and have appropriate graphs and statistics and important or interesting highlights

You must have your topic approved by the instructor. A sample project plan form template will be provided.

Find two variables that you think might have a correlation.

Find, or create by distributing a survey, a paired data set for the two variables. Why is this data important or interesting?

Create a scatterplot. Does the graph show a linear, quadratic, or other polynomic relationship between the variables?

Does the data have an exponential or logarithm relationship?

Find the value of r-squared. Interpret the meaning r-squared specifically for your data.

Find the equation of the regression function and graph the function on your scatterplot.

Use the regression function to make a prediction for some value in the scope of your data. Do you think this is a good prediction?

Use the regression function to make a prediction for some value NOT in the scope of your data. Do you think this is a good prediction?

The report must be submitted as a formal paper in paragraph form, with an introduction that discusses the topic and project, a body that answers all assigned questions, and a conclusion that discusses the results. There is no length requirement as long as all parts and questions are answered. Charts and graphs should be embedded within the report. Raw data should be included at the end in an appendix.

Algebraic Expressions and Graphing

Part 1: New Home

A construction company’s cost to build a new home is $35,000 plus $95 for each square foot of floor space.

a. Write an equation where c is the cost to build a house and f is the square feet of floor space.

b. Use your equation to determine how much it will cost to build a house with an area of 1600 square feet.

Part 2: TV vs. Video Games

The relationship between the number of hours students spend watching TV every week and the number of hours they spend playing video games is shown in the scatter plot. Based on the data, what is the approximate number of hours of video games for a student who watches 5 hours of TV per week? Explain how you found your answer.

Part 3: Bracelets

Shawn makes bracelets using stone beads. He buys the beads for $0.30 each. The wire used to make each bracelet costs $0.10.

a. Write an equation to find the cost (c) to make a bracelet with b beads.

b. One of Shawn’s popular bracelets, the Charmer, includes 15 stone beads. Another bracelet, the Sparkler, uses 20 beads. How much does it cost to make each bracelet?

c. The Charmer bracelet sells for $8 and the Sparkler sells for $12. Write equations to show the relationship between the number of each kind of bracelet (b) Shawn sells and the money he makes (m).
